2.4 Strategies to strengthen households

Well-functioning households are key to thriving individuals and communities worldwide. Commoning, market activities, state policies and state funding all have a role to play in strengthening households to better meet human needs within planetary boundaries.

At the end of Subtopic 2.4 Strategies to strengthen households, you should be able to:

• explain why well-functioning households are needed in society

• describe actions that household members can take to strengthen care and distribute care and household work more equitably

• describe examples of commoning that strengthen households by sharing resources, providing human needs and a safety net, building social networks, and improving gender equality

• describe examples of business actions in the workplace/supply chain, marketplace and society that strengthen households

• describe examples of state actions that strengthen households including regulations and incentives, supporting incomes, and providing services and infrastructure
